Job Description

Expressions of Interest – Quarantine Manager – Mickleham – Victoria

IRT specialises in the worldwide movement of horses by air with a network of offices strategically located throughout the globe. Horses imported into Australia (other than from NZ) are required to undergo a mandatory 14 day Post Entry Quarantine (PEQ) period at the Government Quarantine facility based in Mickleham, Victoria, under the strict supervision of the Dept of Agriculture & Water Resources (DA).  Consignments imported by IRT consist of various breeds, ages, sexes & disciplines.

As IRT are required to manage all matters relating to the daily care and maintenance of horses during their PEQ, we are seeking to appoint a Quarantine Manager with at least 5+ years proven background in managing a Stud, Stable or Agistment facility. As the horses under IRT’s care during any PEQ period vary in breed, age, sex & discipline, it is important our Quarantine Manager is able to handle horses of all temperaments and in particular, has substantial experience in the day to day care/control of entires.

Overview of Responsibilities:

  • Ensure full compliance with biosecurity protocols throughout the PEQ period
    for both personnel and horses
  • Daily liaison with IRT management & personnel involved in the coordination of the shipment
  • Providing daily reports in respect to the horses health & well being
  • Overseeing and management of IRT personnel on-site
  • Recruitment and coordination of IRT casual personnel ensuring shifts covering full 24 hour period are covered
  • Direct on-site point of liaison for DA Officers/personnel
  • Liaison & coordination of visits by Veterinary Surgeons
  • Coordinating and supervision of Farrier visits
  • Preparation and dissemination of stall plans
  • Calculating, Ordering & organising delivery of fodder and bedding needs
  • Supervision & assistance in preparing facility for arrivals (Set Up)
  • Supervision & assistance in clean-up of facility to meet stringent biosecurity requirements immediately post release of horses
  • Coordinating and supervision of release of horses onto road transport vehicles at release
  • Planning / preparation of feeding regimes for individual horses
  • Ensuring all veterinary instructions & treatment plans are adhered to
  • Planning and coordinating turnouts/exercise programs according to availability of facilities
  • Taking and recording of daily rectal temperatures
  • Taking and recording of weights both on arrival & departure of horses
  • Coordinating and supervising the taking of IRT specific photographs on arrival & immediately prior to departure of horses
  • Ensuring compliance with all WH&S requirements by IRT personnel – including the wearing of PPE (helmets & protective vests) whilst in close proximity to the horses

Successful Applicants MUST possess:

  • Solid “hands on” horse experience – including proven background in handling entires
  • Sound knowledge of horse husbandry requirements – including a knowledge of administering sedation
  • Flexible attitude
  • Attention to detail
  • Exceptional staff management skills
  • Ability to develop a supportive and happy team
  • Is able to work to tight timeframes
  • Understand and balance diverging demands
  • Manage a casual workforce to obtain the best results
  • Understand and implement WH&S processes
  • Have a “can do” approach
  • MUST already hold appropriate authorisation/Visa to work in Australia
