To provide care and maintenance of dressage and all horses at McGarett Park and to
work under the supervision of employers. The role includes but is not
To work as part of team and take instruction as required and provide constructive feedback.
Feeding of horses and other feeding duties etc.
Mucking out and cleaning stables
Preparation of horses for daily work and tacking down afterwards
Grooming, washing, rug changing of all horse on the property as directed
Maintenance of paddocks eg: pick up of manure on daily basis
Mowing paddocks as required
Easy fixing of fencing as required
To provide advice of any injuries/damage to horses, property, etc.
To keep all areas, stables, tack room, rug areas, sheds, feed room, hay area and front of stables clean and tidy and swept at all times
To do other duties as required by the owners of McGarett Park.
To groom at competitions if required – training provided in plaiting etc.
Lunging of horses if and when required – training provided.
To be observant at all times and adhere to general rules which include but are not limited to:
Do not use your mobile phone (unless hands free) whilst handling horses eg: walking,
leading, grooming etc.
No Smoking in stable area or around hay or feed.
Drive quad in low gear at all times and never at high speed.
If using quad with horses, horse must walk at all times
Being aware that horses can be dangerous animals and adhering to discipline as
required by McGarett Park.
Always walk horses with head collar, chain and lead rope attached.
Close all paddock gates.
Always pick out horses feet before bringing out of stables, prior to exercise, following
exercise or when bringing horses in from the paddock.
Pick out paddock horses feet once daily and apply dressing as required.
Ensure all horse rugs are fitted correctly with leg straps done up.
Ensure stable doors are closed and bolted correctly and never left open or ajar
Ensure back gate is always closed
Ensure front gate is always closed and in evening padlock is locked.
Ensure dogs are looked after when owners away from property and feed as required.
Hours: Five and half days per week or as advised.
Normal work hours 6am to 1pm and 3 – 3.30pm to 5.00pm or as required which can also allow for
change of work days and days off. However we do not watch the clock it is a lifestyle.
Plus ½ hour 5 times per week shared to do night stables, skip out, rugs check horses.
Flexibility and ability to change with other grooms allowing evenings off as well as
understanding that daily things can change, things can go wrong for example sick horses
etc., and horses can’t tell the time!
